Are there really twists for every occasion? Well, maybe for every yoga occasion! For each kind of pose you do, there is a twisting variation of that pose, including standing poses, head stand, shoulder stand, backbends, forward bends and resting poses. In poses of each category that are not twisting, there is a clear division between the actions of the lower body and upper body. What do the twisting variations add? Well, in a sense these serve to integrate the upper and lower body through the spiraling that is continuous from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. The outcome of this integration can be felt in the pose as an inward opening in the breath, and when we come out of the pose as better grounding through our feet and greater sense of ease and calmness in the nervous system.
